First, an acknowledgement for the moment we’re in. As some of you may know, I am based in the Twin Cities, Minnesota – the location of the current “Operation Metro Surge.” It is an understatement to say that these are terrifying times. At the same time, I’m overwhelmed by the way my community (both local and afar!!!) has come together to organize, to do what is within our power to resist, to protect our neighbors. THANK YOU to those who have reached out or donated to families here in Minnesota! Words fall short to express my gratitude. ♥
Outside of the Spanish immersion trips, I’m an educator in a public school and am witnessing the way this is traumatizing our community and separating families. My team at the school continues to respond to the immediate needs of our students and families. Please let me know if you’d like to support our work, or if you’re looking for other ways to help; I can share more information and resources.
You may be asking – are we still traveling this year? Great question. I started these programs for moments of connection between humans, for the joys and challenges of learning a new language, to build language skills that foster communication and belonging, for the love of travel and adventure, to try delicious new foods, for laughter, for new friendships, and for expanding our understanding of the world. It is in times such as these, I believe that connecting with community and finding time for joy and rest are necessities.
YES, we will continue to create new memories and connect with our fellow human beings across languages & cultures and to deepen our understanding of the world. ♥
